# Anyone getting SSD Gen 3 to work with Pironman5 + NVMe SSD?

I have a Samsung 990 Evo (not the pro version) and running Ubuntu on my Pi5 + Pironman5. I can’t get it to do anything higher than 31000 on the benchmark: [Search Results - pironman - pibenchmarks.com](https://pibenchmarks.com/search/pironman/) - I’ve tried the override to get Gen3 but nothing seems to work.

Besides setting **dtparam=pciex1\_gen3** , did you do anything else? Any help would be great. BTW, nice score on pi [benchmarks.com](http://benchmarks.com).

I take a look to my boot config and I don’t make modifications on this setup, only OC.
I’ve a test and get this results, then put dtparam=nvme and dtparam=pciex1\_gen=3, reboot, make second test
Have you try to OC your pi5?

Got my Pironman 5 Max recently, installed one m2 port with Samsung 990PRO, the other one is empty, run the storage tests (PiBenchmarks) with gen 3 & with out gen 3 by adding ‘dtparam=pciex1 & dtparam=pciex1\_gen=3’, the results are the SAME; so my conclusion is that the Dual NVMe M2 board don’t support gen 3 at all.

Well, FWIIW: Oranges/Apples (different brand WD), but my system won’t boot without dtparam=pciex1\_gen=3. It will mount when booted from SD, but won’t boot from nvme. Booting from SD and measuring with hdparm gives me 890 MB/sec with gen3 enabled and 125 MB/sec with gen1. So, I think that it is working here. OTOH, with my Max5 that has 2 nvme drives in mirror RAID array it makes little difference. I assumed that was because of the pcie switch effect, it was a little less than half.

Well, 5max dual nvme uses ASM1182e 2-port PCIe x1 gen2 switch, which could not enable gen3 capability. Based on your comments, I tested booting from SD card (trixie) for both gen2 & gen3 as well; the results are, for Disk Read: 412MB/s vs 413 MB/s; Disk Write: the same as 347MB/s; these are the same results with booting from nvme SSD card.

Yes. The dual NVMe PIP module in our Pironman 5 Max does not support Gen 3; it only supports Gen 2.
