Hello,

I recently purchased a pidog V2 with a raspberry 5 4 GB.

When I try to run the example script “1\_wake\_up.py” it works for about 10 to 20 seconds and then it crashes. Sometimes it crashes while doing the initialization itself.

This happens with other scripts too.

I’m running the scripts directly via SSH

Any ideas?

Thanks

Thank you very much for purchasing PiDog V2 and for taking the time to report this issue. I’m sorry for the trouble it has caused you.

You mentioned that the example scripts run successfully, but the robot crashes about 10–20 seconds after starting (and sometimes crashes during initialization itself). Since the code does run, the software installation and system environment are basically fine, which suggests the problem is more likely related to power supply or servo current during operation — the Pi 5 draws more peak power than previous models, and the sudden current spike when the servos move can cause a voltage drop, triggering a system reboot or program crash.

To help us pinpoint the cause, could you please check and reply with the following:

Power supply: Are you currently powering it with the 3PIN battery, or via USB-C directly to the Robot HAT? If using the battery, is it fully charged?
Behavior at the moment of the crash: Is there any error message in the terminal when it crashes? Does the indicator light on the Robot HAT turn off? Are the servos stuck, jittering, or making unusual noises?
Could you record a video showing the whole process from running the script to the crash (including the terminal output on screen)?
How to submit the video/photos: Please upload the files to Google Drive (or another cloud service), then send us the share link. Please also set the link permission in your cloud drive to “Anyone with the link can view”, otherwise we won’t be able to open it.

Once we receive the above information, we’ll analyze it as soon as possible and provide the next steps. Thank you again for your patience and cooperation. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us.

Just a random thought, you wouldn’t happen to be over-clocking your Pi5-4GB? I tried it and got flakey runtime behavior, it’s one thing to do it for Math Calculations or Gaming, a bit riskier with a RoboHAT 4/5 with a boatload of motors and sensors hooked up.

After much trying I pinned down the issue. It is a defective motor in the rear legs that crashes the Raspberry when overloaded. The same motor would sometimes jitter and be in the wrong position.

Do I have to purchase a new motor or is there any possibility to open a warranty ticket?

Thanks for your advice

I swapped the faulty motor that was moving one leg to the working motor of the tail. Now the pidog can do all walking and standing movements but if it wags its tail the Raspberry crashes. Unplugging the tail motor allows for a correct execution of the 1\_wakeup.py. script.

Thank you very much for your patience and for the thorough troubleshooting you have done. We really appreciate how clearly you have pinpointed the issue. Your cross-swap test confirmed that the faulty servo causes the Raspberry Pi to crash whenever it is driven, whether it is mounted on the rear leg or on the tail, and that unplugging that servo allows the script to run normally — this is extremely helpful for us to identify the cause, and we are sorry for the trouble it has caused you.

Based on your test results, we can confirm that the servo itself is defective (for example, an internal short or excessive stall current pulling down the supply voltage, which then triggers a Raspberry Pi reboot or program crash), rather than a software or system environment issue. We will arrange to send you a replacement servo.

To arrange the replacement as quickly as possible, could you please provide the following info to [service@sunfounder.com](mailto:service@sunfounder.com):

Your order number, along with the purchase channel if possible;
Shipping details: recipient name, phone number, and full shipping address.
Once we receive the above information, we will submit it to our after-sales team and arrange the replacement, and we will keep you updated on the progress.

In the meantime, before the new servo arrives, we suggest not powering the faulty servo for extended periods, to avoid repeated overload that could further affect the Robot HAT or the Raspberry Pi.

Thank you again for your patience and cooperation. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us.
