Hello,

I just assembled my Pironman 5 last night and got everything working except the NVME. I’m not getting the SSD read at all. In fact, I don’t see an indicator light lighting up at all on the hat.

What are my troubleshooting steps for this? I’ve updated the EEPROM and I’ve tried repeatedly to unseat and reinsert the cable. I have not tried swapping the cable out altogether yet.

The SSD does work as I was able to successfully connect it to my PC where I loaded an OS image onto it.

Thoughts?

I have tried swapping out the cable and it’s not helping. In fact, if I have a cable inserted (either one) on both sides (meaning into the Raspberry Pi and into the HAT) the device will not even power on. But as soon as I take out either end of the cable…it powers on. So something about the HAT being connected is wrong and preventing the Pi from even powering up. What does that tell me about what is wrong?

What is your SSD model number? Also it’s not clear what it means to connect two cables at the same time, so it’s best if you can send a photo to show what you mean. You could try reconnecting the PCIE connector using the spare PCIE FFC cable included in the package.

Here are the photos. I was not saying that two cables are connected at once. I meant that both ENDS of the cable are connected at once, the appropriate way (I think) the device won’t power on at all. The model # is ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 1TB NVME.

And yes I’ve already tried both FFC cables. Changing out the cable didn’t fix the issue.

ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro is available in our test table [Compitable NVMe SSD — SunFounder Pironman 5 documentation](https://docs.sunfounder.com/projects/pironman5/en/latest/compitable_nvme_ssd.html)

Please short the J4 EN pin on the PIP board and start the Raspberry Pi to force the SSD to be enabled, and see if the Raspberry Pi recognizes the SSD (attached picture).

I did what you suggested and shorted that connection. Even with that connection shorted, as long as the FFC cable was plugged into the HAT, the Pi would not power on at all. If I unplugged the cable and then shorted the cable, the Pi does power on, but does not detect the M.2 HAT.

From your description, accessing the ffc wire, the raspberry pi won’t start, it may be that there is a short circuit present in the ffc wire or the pip pcb gotta pcie end, please check the appearance of the pcie terminal and the ffc wire and send us a photo.

I have inspected the FFC and the HAT and neither show visual evidence of shorting. I don’t know how to take the HAT out of the case to inspect the bottom as it is attached using the the two screws plus the pin.

I have emailed that email that I am sadly deciding to initiate a return. I have grown impatient with how long this is all taking and want to complete the return before it is too late for the return policy.
