Pironman 5 upgrade (Dual NVMe Expansion Board)

I currently have a Pironman 5 with a single SSD and would like to upgrade it to support RAID-1. Since my current Pman5 is used as my main working computer are there installation instructions included with the upgrade which will preserve the current bootable SSD when I install the expansion board or is it just easier to setup a different Pman5 w/ the expansion so that I installl from scratch?

To upgrade your Pironman 5 to support RAID‑1, you will need the Dual NVMe Expansion Board. You can purchase it here: Dual NVMe Expansion Board for Pironman 5 – Upgrade to Pironman 5 MAX | SunFounder

We recommend following the video tutorial included in our documentation for step‑by‑step guidance: Dual NVMe — SunFounder Pironman 5 documentation

If you have any further questions during the upgrade, please let us know.

Thanks much; the link contains a nice video which describes how to make the h/w mods to a Pironman 5 to install the dual NVMe board, however I was also concerned with what s/w mods were required for RAID-1 redundancy. I’m just not familiar with the software changes required and specifically whether if I buy an identical SSD and plug it in how to combine the new and existing SSDs to build a RAID-1 pair (if that is even possible). Is there any documentation on setting that up? TIA

Thank you for your follow-up question. To set up RAID‑1 with your dual NVMe expansion board, you can use OpenMediaVault (OMV).

Hi Andy,

I configured my Pi5-ubuntu server/ Pironman5 used as a web and mail server 2 years ago, initially with an internal NVMe which is cloned to an identical external USB NVMe. I used dd for the initial cloning, then regular backups of system and data use rsync. There are a few tricks required to do this so that if my internal NVMe dies, then I can simply replace it with the backup external NVMe.

I set this up before the dual NVMe PiP which I guess would now be easier.
