Ideas for young children to learn the basics - Pidog

Hi, I have built a Pidog version 2 - every aspect has worked perfectly (any issues were of my own making). I have since developed it further adding in may cool features.

The original intention was to help teach my 5 and 7 year old grandchildren the basics. Unfortunately for them, it has been more about my enjoyment than theirs.

Before they get completely disinterested in it, I want to try and turn it around so that they do indeed learn something.

I’m wondering how best to do this and where to start - does anyone have any suggestions / plans I could follow ?

Great to hear you have PiDog V2 running so well and even added new features! For 5‑ and 7‑year‑olds, PiDog can indeed be a bit complex. Instead of jumping straight into programming or robotics principles, we’d suggest using it as an interactive robot to spark their interest. Some simple ideas:

Let them watch PiDog perform actions (walk, sit, doze off).

Use colour recognition or object following for fun games.

Ask them “how could we make PiDog do this?” to encourage thinking.

Let them drive PiDog with the app for hands‑on fun.

As they grow older and show more curiosity, you can gradually introduce programming. Learning will feel more natural that way.Hope this helps!
