Don't seem to be able to write to NVME - Pironman 5 Max

I had a really enjoyable Christmas afternoon assembling my Pironman 5 Max, hats off to Pironman, it’s a great product, well designed and professionally sold.

I have an issue with the NVME and I’m hoping someone can help, I have tried to get a (what I believe to be) compatible drive (Lexar NM790) to work. I know the drive is good as I have loaded the OS on it, put it in an USB enclosure and it works perfectly. When I put it in the case on the NVME it boots okay but it appears as soon as any attempt to write to it, it freezes or runs really slowly, eventually causing the desktop to become corrupt. I have tried a second drive (Orico D10) which again I believe should be compatible (and it works in a USB drive) and its the same. It boots fine but as soon as you try to write to it, the system freezes.

Any ideas as to what is happening here, have I two incompatible drives or is my NVME card faulty. I have taken out and remade the IDE cable connections several times so I am pretty sure the NVME card is connected correctly.

Normally, both of your SSDs are compatible with the max case.

We suggest you provide a video of the issue to help us better analyze and resolve the problem for you.

What power adapter are you currently using?
It is recommended to use the official Raspberry Pi 27W power supply for the case, or a third-party 5V 5A power supply.

Try inserting a single SSD at a time, switch between the slots, and then attempt to boot to see if it starts normally.

What is the storage capacity of your SSD?
If it is a high-capacity SSD, we recommend attaching a heatsink to ensure proper heat dissipation and then check the result.

Thank you for your quick reply. To answer your specific questions:

1. I am using an official Raspberry Pi 27W USB-C Power Supply, in fact I have tried two of them, I don’t think it’s a power issue.

2. I have tried both SSD slots, both have issues, by the way I am only trying one slot at a time as I intend to only use a single SSD. I have tried both slots, both will boot to the standard Pi Desktop, then after a few moments the Pi becomes unresponsive (no mouse or keyboard) and the desktop changes to a plain colour (grey) with a single Waste bin Icon in the top left, at that point the situation is past recoverable and you have to cold reboot.

3. The Lexar NM790 is 1TB and has a heatsink, the ORICO D10 is 128GB and doesn’t have a heatsink, however it doesn’t run hot and I’ve used it in other RPI 5’s on NVME cards without problem.

I have installed the OS on a SD card and the system runs fine, whilst running from the SD card, I did try to use the Raspberry Pi Imager to install the OS on the SSD, although the OS found the drive as soon as it tried to write to the SSD it failed, it was a similar issue when I tried to copy the OS to the SSD using the SD Card Copier

I have seen a few strange boots, sometimes it boots quickly straight to the desktop, other times the centre Welcome to the Raspberry Pi Desktop placard shows, along with very slow command line updates, this morning it did this pausing on plymouth-reboot.service for quite some time after I tried updating from the terminal and sudo reboot, eventually it did boot but it took minutes. I also had a failure with the error message as shown in the attached photograph.

Taking videos is possible but awkward, what would you specifically like to see and I’ll try to capture specific details for you.

Yesterday I ordered one of your CN0503D General NVME cards for the Pi5, it arrived today and I’m happy to say worked on my Pironman5 Pi and that both of my drives work perfectly. The problem therefore is isolated to the Pironman5 DUAL NVME PIP card. What is the quickest way to get a replacement?

Please contact service@sunfounder.com and provide your address. We will arrange to send a dual NVMe PIP module to you.
