My Pironman 5 works fine unless you touch the case and any level of static shock takes place, whether you feel it or not. The activity light turns red and the entire Pi locks up. Have to unplug it and re-plug it to get it back. Any thoughts on how to ground this puppy so it won’t do this? It’s plugged into a Canakit 45W power supply that is connected to a grounded surge protector strip. Thanks for any ideas anyone might have.
And why does this happen in the first place? Makes it very difficult to use.
I can confirm that this is an issue. Just had my RPI5/Pironman5 do exactly this. The static shock was sizeable. The LED/light pipe turned orange and only a forced shutdown would fix it (press the button for 10+ seconds, LED goes to red, the you can reboot.).
It did come straight back up, but this needs looking into and a fix found.
I’d like to also confirm this happens. It even powered on by me touching the case. Does connect a Dupont cable to one of the ground pins help this issue. If so, how was it done. I was thinking of how it would be done in a car and such to ground a car stereo by wrapping exposed wire around a screw and the other end attached to a GND pin.
But you didn’t attach the GND connection to the IO expander, did you? That’s very ugly imo. Can I as well connect the GND pin from PoE connector to the case in order to solve this issue? Edit: it seems I misunderstood the concept of PoE and there is no GND pin there.
So it seems I have to use a GPIO GND pin, or ist there a solution that I don’t see?
I am also having this issue. If you touch the case at all the system locks up and I have to pull the power cable. I see discussion about adding a “DuPont” cable to the GND pin….I have no idea how/what to do with that info.
Anyone feel like sharing the solution or point me in the right direction?
Use a Dupont wire to connect a GND pin on the GPIO header. Connect the other end of the wire to the metal case, ensuring it is firmly and securely in contact. Then check to see if this resolves the static electricity issue.
