Pironman - not recognizing SSD

We will contact you at the email.

I am also experiencing the same issue. I was able to verify the external PCIe with works with a different hat and same SSD m.2 drive. How do I go about getting a replacement Pironman 5 SSD hat?

Have you take a look to compatible SSD NVMe chart?

https://docs.sunfounder.com/projects/pironman5/en/latest/compitable_nvme_ssd.html

Thanks for the reply. I have look at that a few times. I don’t see my specific SSD drive (not NVMe specifically). Unless the controller of the drive is not compatible. The m.2 SSD is a Timetec 512 GB SSD.

Just be sure it’s NVMe SSD, not SATA SSD :
https://docs.sunfounder.com/projects/pironman5/en/latest/advanced/nvme_pip.html#about-the-model

And enable PCIe into /boot/firmware/config.txt as mention there :
https://docs.sunfounder.com/projects/pironman5/en/latest/install/copy_sd_to_nvme_rpi.html

Hope this will help you.

It’s SATA SSD. So these are not supported? I read this on the link you sent:

"

  • M.2 SATA SSDs: These use the SATA interface, similar to 2.5-inch SATA SSDs but in the smaller M.2 form factor. They are limited by the SATA III maximum speeds of around 600 MB/s. These SSDs are compatible with M.2 slots keyed for B and M keys.

"
I didn’t read anything that specifically says Sata M.2 drive not be supported. I mean the drive fits in and all and powers on.

Here’s the m.2 Sata drive I have.

So then does the Pironman 5 m.2 hat not support this m.2 Sata SSD?

It’s mentioned on Pironman5 description…

I meant to reply directly. I posted below.

I’ll take your word for it.
I really wish the slot on the hat wasn’t keyed to accept both NVMe and m.2 sata SSD. And an explicit note such as ā€œNote: although the m.2 slot accepts m.2 Sata, the drive type is not supported.ā€

You can write them down at service@sunfounder.com to maybe change the SSD socket to accept only NVMe and void conflict with SATA SSD in next production batch.

Weirdguy, thanks for your help. This was a pain to track down. I kept thinking I physically connected the flat cable wrong or something.

No problem Bal323, you’re welcome. Wasn’t easy to assemble it, it’s tiny, easy to make mistakes. If you have any questions or problems, fell free!

I got a NVMe drive and now it is showing up!

Ok it’s a good news, now it’s recognized  How do you want to use your Rpi5? As PC, retrogaming, home assistant, NAS? Do you want to run OS from NVMe or SD card? You need to format the NVMe, the easiest way is to have the recommended desktop OS on SD card, boot with it then open Imager, select rpi5, format and select the NVMe and start. If you want to install OS on it just select it. After that, shut it down, remove SD card and boot it. It should work.

I hope my explanations are well, my English is basic.

Your English is very good. I actually assumed you were a native English speaker. So that’s the toughest thing… What do I do with this new computer?

I do have a Raspberry Pi 3 RetroPi, but the Pi 5 is much more capable. I also already have 2 NAS devices and a dedicated PfSense firewall. Decisions decisions. Oh and I have an OctoPi also for 3D printer. And I have another pi for automation using the GPIO pins.

Honestly I bought the new Pi so I could build the Pironman 5 hehehe :joy_cat:. I am thinking about putting Docker on the Pi 5 and using it as a sandbox of sorts for playing around with Linux and Docker stuff.

Yep, I did the SD copier right away (couldn’t wait :joy: ). I didn’t usually use an SD card on my Pi’s. As soon as the NVMe drive was detected, I copied over the Raspian install and changed the boot order and popped out the SD card.

Omg, as I can see you aren’t at your first raspberry. I’m very impressed. I only have pi5 into pironman5 as PC and pi4 into pironman v2 as retrogaming who take dust in a corner. And an Arduino starter kit to learn a bit.
