SD Extender seems broken

I received my pironman 5 today, I assembled it and when attempting to boot it it dumped out to the initramfs prompt, I tried reseating it, but it failed every time, I removed the extender and plugged the sd card straight in and it worked fine. I’m pretty sure my sd extender is faulty.

  1. Please check the SD card if it has damage or errors. Try using another SD card for testing.
Check if the SD card is properly formatted and has the correct system image on it.
  2. Try to press the extender gently to make sure the contact points are not loose, causing the SD card not to be detected yet.
Replace the HDMI port to see if the display shows the picture.

I’ve been out of town for the week. I have tried all those things. I removed the extender, put the sd right in the pi and reassembled the box. It works fine without the extender.

I had tried several times to re-insert the extender and it failed to boot each time.

Please contact service@sunfounder.com.We will send you a SD extender module.

Actually I have the same problem with the extender.

Thank you. I sent them an email this morning.

Me too, I’ve some problem with SD card extender, they send me another one and this one too have same problem…

If the SD expansion board does not recognise the SD card, please consult at service@sunfounder.com.
We will send you a tested and verified replacement SD expansion board.
Try to gently press the expander to make sure the contact point is not loosened, resulting in the SD card not being detected.

Hi all,

A little tip as I had similar. After partially dismantling the whole thing and removing the extender it all worked fine.
My solution eventually turned out to be the fact it is just not going deep enough and it is really marginally to be honest.
I was able with very small (key makers tools) file to enlarge the mounting holes just a little bit more so it can be seated a little deeper and my problems are gone. Again, it is really marginal but just enough to prevent some IO errors at some point.

Hope this helps others as well.

Can you take pictures of modifications you made to SD extender?

Can you provide us with the modified images?

I hope it is clear enough on the picture.
I just made the mounting holes a bit more oval so the extender can go just a little bit deeper into the Pi5 SD card slot.

Of course your result may vary. For me this works now though…. Still….

Sorry but it didn’t work for me. Still unable to boot with an SD card in the extender. Need to use a usb sd card reader to boot.

Please contact at serive@sunfounder.com
We will send you the SD extension board.

Sorry to hear that.
Service indeed will help you

I got the same issue with the SDCard Expander of pironman 5 because when I connect the extender to my Pi5 and boot via a SD Card, the device fails to boot. However, If I plug the SD card directly to my pi5 it will boot normally

I have sent several emails to service and support with videos to show the issue. Hope they can send me a replacement for the SDCard extender soon.

Well, sadly and unfortunately my modification did not last for booting from the ssd card at least.
It seems using it as an external drive like thing is working fine but booting from it fails and never gets to the desktop part of things….

Yes it is my error is exactly the same

Hope they sent the replacement asap
