FYI to anyone still watching this thread, i have just received an email that V14 of the extender board is about to ship. hopefully, i don’t break anything during the disassembly/reassembly.
I recently received another one a few days ago, and I believe it’s version 12. Please find the attachment for reference. I haven’t tried it yet. Will version 14 be sent to everyone in this thread?
Thank you,
Trung.
I can confirm that V12 will work with SanDisk SD cards, it definitely doesn’t work with Lexar and Samsung!
Another victim of the faulty SD extender. It’s a v12 and the Canakit Pi5 I started out with came with a Samsung card. Card works without the extender. For now I just reassembled everything without the extender. Works well otherwise. Immediately dropped my CPU temps from the 50’s down to the 30’s
I emailed support. How long does it take to get a new extender shipped out and is there a version known to work with Samsung cards?
We have currently identified the issue with the SD card expansion board. The existing SD card expansion board is not compatible with most high-capacity high-speed storage cards, and we have fixed this issue. Please contact us at service@sunfounder.com to get the V14 version of the SD expansion board.
Hello there,
I faced the same issue while attempting to boot—the system consistently dropped to the I/O error prompt. I reseated the SD extender multiple times, but the problem persisted. When I removed the extender and plugged the SD card directly into the board, it worked perfectly.
I have also followed all your recommended troubleshooting steps, but none resolved the problem. I’m attaching a picture of the board I have for your reference. Could you please provide a replacement for this defective part? I’ve already sent also an email to service@sunfounder.com with this same information and, in addition, the error details and the invoice of my purchase.
You’ve got V11 of the board. Apparently issues have been resolved in V14. You did the best possible thing by asking for a replacement. Sunfounder isn’t based out of NA (I am pretty sure), so might be a bit before the mod is awake and replying.
Please contact us to get a replacement for the V14 version at service@sunfounder.com.
If it resolves your issues, please share your experience here.
The v14 technically solved the problems of the other board, but the second I popped the card out to put my pironman completely back together it broke and no longer stays inserted. I emailed support to see what they’ll do next, but at this point I’ve given up and just reassembled the case without an extender. I have zero desire to take everything apart a third time if they send me another board, but I guess we’ll see.
You mentioned that the SD extension board is damaged and cannot fit into the PI5 slot. Could you please provide us with a video? Is it that the PI5 slot cannot secure the SD extension board, or is the SD extension board completely unable to insert, as if it’s stuck on something?
Please be cautious when inserting the SD extension board into the PI5 slot.
We suggest you provide a video of the issue. If the SD extension board is damaged and cannot be inserted, that’s manageable; we can send you a replacement. However, if the PI5 slot is damaged and prevents the SD extension board from locking in, that would be more complicated.
Additionally, if you are currently using the V14 version of the SD extension board, please share your experience. Is it compatible with your current type of SD card? Can the high-capacity SD cards be recognized and function properly? We appreciate your feedback.
Happy New Year everyone.
Yesterday I received the v14 of the extender and installed it this morning. I’m happy to report that this one is working perfectly fine now. No more issues at all with booting or what ever. Happy dutch guy here. Thanks SunFounder for your continuous support, improvements and service level you present to the community.
While v14 seems to resolve the issue of booting with Samsung cards, but now my as performance is probably at most 25% the original speed. Booting up and using the system is extremely slow compared to boot up directly from PI5… any ideas?
To be sure, I tested this, with and without the SD Extender and I do not experience this behavior though.
Actually it been a while since I used the Pi5 and after updating everything, even the slow shutdown that was happening before is not even there anymore.
Overhere it works as a breeze.
That’s great to hear. I will have to do more testing on my end. Thanks for the feedback.
Do you inform your resellers about this issue? I’ve just bought mine and I have the exact same problem which took me about 1 hour to figure out this is a known ‘defect’ + the pironman5 installation script runs into an error as mentioned in another topic.
Regarding the issue of the SD expansion board not being compatible with high-capacity SD cards, the V14 version of the SD expansion board can solve the problem.
We’ll get back to our dealers on this issue, and subsequent pironman5 products will be configured with the V14 version of the SD Expansion Board.
However, it’s not that fast yet, if your pironman5 product has SD card that can’t be booted by SD expansion board, please contact us to solve the problem. service@sunfounder.com
